6 ERD wells in the same field were designed from scratch, based on previous operator experience. This gave a unique opportunity to present an approach focused on improving design parameters to establish predictability in operations. Previous issues with formation instability were identified and mitigated in the new well design by solutions including drilling fluids enabling inhibition of swelling and dispersing clays, trajectory optimization, logging requirements and bit selection. To ensure a basis for change and optimization, a drilling sequence together with a data collection program was proposed.
